Where in the World…PERU!

Photobucket

Welcome to my new feature, Where in the World! As you all know, I love to travel. Since I’m not able to get away nearly as often as I wish, I figured I’d find a way to bring the element of travel to the blog! Fashion blogging is not exactly new in the States, but there are plenty of stylish ladies across the globe. Once a month we’ll tour around the world together meeting a new international style blogger!

Our first featured blogger is Midori from Lima, Peru.  I’ve been reading her blog, The Trend Stalker for a few months now. I had no idea she read Archives until she commented on my recent post, mentioning my trip to Peru. I was so excited to hear from her, I emailed her and learned not only that she does she have a great blog, but she also owns a boutique in Lima! I knew she would be the perfect stylish lady to kick off the Where in the World series.

Name: Midori Pinillos
Blog: The Trend Stalker www.thetrendstalker.com
Profession: I studied Advertising but I’m now a Boutique Owner

How long have you been blogging?
About a year, but I used to have another blog called “Apuntes de Moda”. I created The Trend Stalker in June.
Tell us a little bit about your blog:
The Trend Stalker (TTS) is an outlet for my fashion/art related interests. There’s a little bit of everything: street style, info about Peruvian and international designers, reviews on recent collections, my personal style, fashion photography, etc. For me, blogging is a way to keep learning more about fashion and share my views on it.
Are there many Peruvian fashion bloggers?
Not as many as in other countries but it’s a growing community. There must be about 30 that I know of that post regularly.
What is unique about Peruvian fashion?
For a long time Peru has been known for its quality materials such as alpaca and pima cotton and for the mass production for big clothing brands like Lacoste. But in the past 10 years or so, Peru has started to become more interested in fashion, reason why there is now a new young generation of fashion designers with really interesting and different points of view.
I think what makes Peruvian fashion unique is that it is unexpected. Fashion in Peru is still young and exploring different directions. Added to that, are the different cultural influences existent in Peru and the heritage of craftmanship.
Do you have a favorite Peruvian designer?
Several. But I’d have to say that my ultimate favorite is Jose Francisco Ramos. He’s a young designer who I have posted about lots of times. In addition to using organic materials and promoting ethical fashion, he works with proportions beautifully, with an architectural feel to his designs.
What inspired you to open your shop, Trend Studio?
Young Peruvian designers. They inspired me. I knew there were so many talented designers out there that didn’t have an appropriate space to show their collections, I just felt I needed to work with them.
Three favorite items in your wardrobe:
A custom made tulip skirt by Jose Francisco Ramos.
A pair of vintage looking golden/turquoise Hale Bob shoes.
Black/golden Harem pants by Alessandra Petersen (so comfy).
What’s currently on your wish list to buy? Lots of things! Remember that I own a shop, I like everything I have in there.
Are there vintage clothing shops in Lima? Not really. It’s a shame. You can find beautiful old purses in some markets, but they have to be fixed. When I want some vintage flair I usually go to my grandma’s and search every inch of her house (where I can find some Japanese goodies).
If someone were to travel to Peru, what is one item they should buy to incorporate into their wardrobe?  When in Peru you should buy an alpaca suri dress (from a peruvian designer or quality store).
What would you like international bloggers to know about Peru and/or Peruvian fashion?  I’d just like them to know that fashion is developing in Peru and that the new generation of designers are a real promise. Just keep Peru under your radar! There’s a lot to come, I promise.

You guys! Yesterday and today have been WINDY. Yes, this is Chicago aka the Windy City, but now it’s more than City Hall (who’s voting next week? I am!) – we’ve had 50 mph gusts for two days! Yesterday I wore jeans to avoid any Marilyn Monroe moments in a skirt, but jeans to work two days in a row wouldn’t cut it.
I’ve been waiting to bust out this awesome dress I bought from the lovely Sarah Louise for over a month now! The material is heavier than most dresses I own, which is exactly what I wanted! A nice, cozy, warm dress for fall and winter. What better time for its inaugural wear than a blustery Chicago day? This amazing wool jacket was purchased at the last Vintage Heaven sale. I was selling vintage but managed to shop a bit as well! I bought not one jacket from Sara of Love Story vintage, but two!
Speaking of vintage, this weekend everything at Archives will be 20% off! From 12am Friday – 11:59pm Sunday, be sure to check out the shop and get your fall duds! I’ve got some great new stuff to hit the shop next Monday.

Top: H&M, Skirt/Necklace: F21, Glasses: Warby Parker, Boots/Bag/Necklaces:Vintage
I can’t believe this skirt is finally making its debut on the blog! This is, hands down, my favorite skirt. Ever. It was probably $12 at F21, and I hope it lasts forever. It’s a repeating pattern of the world map…..LOVE! I have an obsession with maps and atlases (no, that’s not how Atlas got his name). I think it has something to do with looking at all the possibilities – the trips I might take, places to go, adventures to have, memories to be made. Or maybe it has something to do with my love of history. In any case, they’re just beautiful
Confession: sometimes I spend embarrassing amounts of time looking at images of old maps online. Also, I would eventually like some kind of map tattoo.
Since I wear skirts/dresses almost every day, choosing clothing for a backpacking trip is usually difficult and annoying. This was purchased right before my trip to India, and I knew it would be the perfect lightweight, easy to pack, yet still cute skirt to have for any nice dinners or special occasions….like visiting my second Wonder of the World in a year!
P.S. If you love traveling and fashion, be sure to check back on Friday for a new feature I’m introducing!

Hope You’re Not Hungry

Dress/Slip/Belt – Vintage, Cardigan – Woodlands, Purchased in India, Boots – Target, Glasses – Warby Parker
This was my Friday get up. The lovely, sweet and kind Megan of Transmission Me gave me this dress (along with a few others!) about a month ago, and whenever I’m not sure what to wear to work, this has been my go-to garment. Floral patterns usually leave a bad taste in my mouth, but this one I just love. Pairing stripes and florals is something I wouldn’t have ever dared to do six months ago!
Saturday I watched a documentary on the History Channel about the 1972 Uruguayan plane crash. I saw a movie about it when I was a kid, and it was the first time I had cannibalism explained to me – something you don’t quickly forget. None the less, it was really interesting to hear the story first hand from the survivors (who, by the way, do not like the word “cannibal” used when referencing their situation, but rather anthropophagy – resorting to eating human flesh out for survival). If you haven’t seen any of the movies made or read about the plane crash, take a gander….it’s one of those stories that makes you realize life is preeeeeetty good.

I feel obligated to leave you without some adorable pics of Atlas after bringing up cannibalism….to lighten the mood.
There are some new items in the shop, and more to come this week! And, in honor of making my 50th sale over the weekend (woo-hoo!!!), I just might be having a sale next weekend….maybe. But don’t wait! My fall items have been selling fast! So if you see something you love, grab it while it’s still available!

Sesenta Soles

Wearing:
Sweater/Jeans: H&M, Stole: Peru, Boots: Target
Today again I wanted to be comfortable and warm, as I’m still recovering from this gross cold plaguing me. Jeans, sweater, boots and this alpaca stole is just what I needed! This amazing stole was the perfect addition to my outfit to keep me cozy while trying to catch up at work today. Don’t be alarmed by the fur – it’s alpaca! Totally animal friendly – they just shave the little guy and everybody lives! I bought this on our trip to Peru last summer at a market in Lima.

When the vendor in the market told me how many Peruvian soles it was – I thought it translated to several hundred dollars (my Spanish is not that great). Disappointed by the price, I passed on it and walked away. As we continued to stroll through the market, I realized she had said sixty soles (not six hundred!), which is roughly $20. I rushed back to her booth and snatched it up! My only regret is not buying more. Baby alpaca is SO soft – its like nothing else I’ve ever felt. Wearing this feels luxurious while still being casual, and reminds me of our fantastic trip. Wish I could wear it every day!
