I always buy myself a birthday present or two. You have to treat yourself for aging so gracefully, no? It started when I was 23; I decided I wanted to be a DJ (ahem – I was 23). I bought myself a set of turntables to kick start my sweet hobby, which would eventually lead to a glamorous, lucrative, international venue playing career.
Right now one is stored in the basement, and the other in our living room – for when we want to listen to all the vinyl I’ve been hoarding since my teens. Which was, you know…that time we set up the record player, and tested it to see if it worked.
This year I treated myself to a dress I’ve been drooling over, and this lovely faux fox tail keychain from Spotted Moth! I’d been visiting their website daily to stare at it, so I’m pretty stoked it’s finally mine! It’s SO fluffy and soft! And it adds *just* the right amount of rustic to my purse.
Pretty sure I’ll be getting more use out of the fox tail than my dusty turntables.
EDIT: This morning on my way to work, the tail fell off the key chain somewhere between the train and my office. BOO! :(
UPDATE: How awesome is Spotted Moth? I emailed them when I got to work (I was so disappointed!), and they are sending a new one! YAY!  They said it’s a best seller and haven’t heard of that happening to anyone else. So hopefully it was just a fluke. Gotta love great customer service!

Check out my fabulous headband! My dear friend Sarah made it for me. I spotted this original one and fell in love with it’s sparkly, colorful, feminine wonder…but not the price tag. Since Sarah is a skilled milliner, I had a feeling she could whip up a version that fit my budget. I was right! And, not only did she make me a cute one of my own, she made TWO – a big, bold one for when the occasion is right, and this smaller one easier to wear everyday. So great!
It gets better.  Sarah is kindly offering one of her handmade hair accessories to one lucky Archives reader! This great feathered star can be yours! Visit Zzouzi.com and then leave a comment telling us which item in the shop is your favorite, and an email address you can be contacted at. Giveaway closes Monday, December 6, 2010.
Handmade headwear would make a fabulous addition to your holiday outfits, or a fun Christmas gift!

Cheers to 28 Years

I am a quitter. Gracefully stepping out of the 30×30 challenge as a birthday present to myself. I have a long list of reasons, and trust me – I went back and forth over quitting, and in the end decided I needed to. My reasons will just sound like excuses, so just accept it and know I feel good about my decision. :)
Tomorrow is my birthday! I have ZERO plans (on purpose). I will stay in my pajamas all day lounging, watching Christmas movies and decorating the house for the holiday. I cannot wait!

Tryptophan, Presents and Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
I hope you all spent time with loved ones and ate favorite foods. Atlas had his first Thanksgiving turkey taste, plus a few days running around with family. We’re finally settled in back at home, and he’s currently in a state resembling a mild coma (insert loud dog snoring sounds here — )
I’m a vegetarian and never have meat in the house, so he went nutso with all the smells and treats he got today!
Thanks so much to the AMAZING women who stepped in while I was away:

Amanda shared her amazing style and plans for her very special Thanksgiving with her mom and family.

Rachael shared pics at the oldest bar in the US! As a history nerd, New Orleans lover and past patron of Lafitte’s, her post delighted me!
Paige VERY generously parted with some of her hard earned dollahs and made a donation to her local food bank!
I cannot thank you ladies enough. All three of you out did me on my own blog!
Last Friday seems like forever ago. That night Mark and I celebrated my birthday and had a lovely date night before he left on his long business trip to the middle east. Wanna know what my gift was? Please note —- Mark always out does me in the gift department. He is THE best gift giver on the planet. This year was no exception.
I got a birthday/Christmas gift wrapped up in one big trip to ALASKA

YES! Seriously!
I was so surprised! We’re going this summer and I cannot wait!!!
So that’s what’s new. I feel like I’ve been away forever! Lots of catching up to do on blog reading and posting! But for now I’m going to pour myself a big glass of wine, cuddle my zonked pup and watch some tv.
xoxoxo

giving back

hello friends and fans of archives! i’m paige from barefoot&vintage
lisa asked me to fill in for her while she’s away thrifting and visiting her family.
i couldn’t say no, as i know lisa would do the same for me! not only that, but i am truly honored to be guest posting right along side the lovely ladies that are amanda of off of broadway and rach of ordinarily urbane. if you haven’t already, check out their thanksgiving inspired posts here and here!

thanksgiving…

what does it mean to you? what are you thankful for?
i’m thankful for my son, my family, MP, great friends. i’m thankful that i have a job. i’m thankful that i have a car to drive, clothes to wear, a roof over my head, running water, a warm bed. i’m thankful that i have things to laugh and smile about..and that no matter what, even if i’ve had a really bad day…things could be worse.
imagine being homeless. imagine scrounging dumpsters for food or begging for pennies just to save up a few dollars for a burger or a coke…or for a bottle of clean drinking water…
we all take these little pleasures for granted, i know i often do.

so this year i thought i’d give back, help those less fortunate…
maybe you’d like to help, too?

for every comment left on this blog post, i will donate $1 (in food) to the manna food bank. all you have to do is tell me what you’re thankful for!
($50 max donation)

thank you for your help! and happy thanksgiving to you and your loved ones!
