Stack It Up

Stack It Up

You all know by now I tend to steer away from trends and aim for classic rather than of the moment. That doesn’t mean I won’t embrace the occasional passing fad, but you won’t see me in a color blocked* outfit with pink ombre hair in Jeffery Campbell shoes anytime soon**.

I’ve been a bracelet junkie for as long as I can remember; my collection is embarrassingly expansive. However, I tend to wear one or two at a time. What better way to make good use of them than to wear a bunch all at once?! I’m loving the stacked bracelet trend happening right now. (And no, I won’t call it an “arm party” because it’s not a party if cocktails aren’t involved).

JewelMint asked if they could send me a few pieces from their site, and when I laid eyes on this bronze zipper bracelet, my little heart went pitter patter. This zipper bracelet really cinches this combo for me, and I’ve been wearing this entire set non-stop for days! When it comes to stacking bracelets, my formula requires two things:

1. Mix vintage and modern

2. The more textures and patterns involved, the better

Bracelets: JewelMint, vintage, F21

*It’s just wearing two colors, people! I don’t understand how this is a “thing”.

**There’s nothing wrong with trying out trends, just be sure to make them your own! :)

Jumping the Shark: Is It Fall Yet?!

Jumping the Shark: Is It Fall Yet?!

Last week Andrea very kindly let Emily, Merl and myself tag along to the Chicago fall preview for ASOS. I’ve stalked many an item on their website, but have yet to indulge. I’m always leery of buying online from a new-to-me store, and ASOS is no exception. Their prices are fair but higher than fast fashion stores, and I had (wrongly) assumed the quality would be about the same.

Each and every garment seemed very well made – not the flimsy kind of thing that will fall apart after a few washes. I’m not the kind to gush much over “new” clothes (I am who I am – a vintage girl at heart!), but ASOS won me over – big time.

The gorgeous view we enjoyed while perusing their autumnal goods!

I’ve been using a new treatment on my hair (post coming on that, soon!), and trying to stretch the days between washes. After looking back at these photos….I definitely let it go one day too long. Yuck. Lesson learned!

Fall may not be here just yet, so I’m jumping the shark. Darker colors and (most importantly!) BOOTS have been officially re-introduced into my rotation! I had to wear something fall inspired to look at fall clothes, right?!

Saturday afternoon, Deliciously Vintage very kindly hosted some fabulous local bloggers for a meet up! We noshed on some cake pops made by yours truly, sipped some champagne and got to know each other. The blogging community in Chicago is small but quickly growing, so it was great to meet some new ladies and hang out with old pals!

Leopard and Lace

Leopard and Lace

Saturday was the Chicago Blogger Meet Up! It was great fun meeting new local bloggers and catching up with some old pals. More about that tomorrow (plus a giveaway!) – so for now, here’s what I wore.

I’d planned on wearing something totally different, but at the last minute pulled this lace number out. Vintage square dance dress…so predictable, eh? What can I say, this silhouette is my go-to fashion comfort zone. The sleeves on this garment were originally much too large and puffy (as evidenced here), so about 5 minutes before leaving, I snipped them off! Now I’ll be able to throw a cardigan over it in the fall!

If you attended the meet up, please send me your links / photos and I’ll add them to the meet up page!

Recipe: Homemade Hummus

Recipe: Homemade Hummus

Confession: I hate cooking. Mostly because I’m impatient and dread the mess it involves. But I’m trying to get over it. One of my favorite foods is hummus, which I recently ventured into making. You know what? It’s SUPER easy to make, and if you make a big batch, is a great, healthy snack to keep in the fridge. I almost always have some on hand!

Another confession: I hate recipes. Ridiculous, I know. Exact measurements just aren’t for me. Unless baking (which is all science), I just use a recipe as a guideline and tailor to my taste.

Here’s a rough sketch of Hummus ala Burback:

2 cans of chick peas (drained)
2 lemons
1/4 cup chopped onions
handful of celery + celery leaves
1/4 cup olive oil
1 clove garlic
4 tbsp tahini
salt, to taste
splash of water
dash of red pepper flakes

Toss all that good stuff (save for the water and lemons) into a food processor. Juice those lemons right into the mixture. Add a splash of water, just enough to give everything some movement.

Process and….

…..voila! HUMMUS!

Serve with fresh veggies, triangles of toasted pita, spread on a sandwich or pair with falafel! I recommend storing in the fridge in small tupperware containers – easy to grab for a snack!
