Road Trip: Chicago to Albuquerque!

Road Trip: Chicago to Albuquerque!

Mark and I made a spur of the moment decision this morning to drive to New Mexico…on Saturday! He has to go for a work project, so we’re making a little adventure out of it! I absolutely love Albuquerque/the Southwest, and have been really feeling burnt out, so I’m REALLY looking forward to it.

The best part is that I’ll be spending most of my time sourcing goods for the shop! If you have any suggestions on good vintage or thrift shops in the Abq/Santa Fe area, let me know!

Seeing as I had zero time to save/plan for this trip, the shop is marked down 25% today and tomorrow, and everything will ship before I leave. (There are also some ebay auctions running at the moment).

Peplum

Peplum

If you’ve opened up a fashion magazine in the last few months, you’ve likely heard that peplums are “in” right now. While they are making themselves known, perhaps for the first time to today’s stylish ladies, they have made their way in and out of fashion dating back to the days of ancient Greece!

It drives me a little crazy (okay, more than a little) when something becomes trendy for a season, and everyone jumps on board without deciding if it works for them…or even bother to find out exactly what it is. I’ve been seeing many a stray ruffle being referred to as a peplum these days.

pep·lum/ˈpepləm/

Noun:
  1. A short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, or blouse.

This 1940s cranberry rayon dress was plucked from my shop inventory, as it has a few stains and spots I couldn’t lift. It’s a little big on me, and floral dresses typically aren’t my thing, but this has been my go-to dress on warmer days! And yes – I do love it’s tiered peplum waist…trendy or not!

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes

Two years ago almost to the day, I was home from work recovering from having my wisdom teeth out. Archives was *juuuuust* starting to come together. I had been collecting vintage garments for months and was prepping to start photographing them so I could open the shop.  All I needed was a dress form to shoot them on! I was so excited to be home when it arrived, I documented it:

( 2010 )

Atlas was brand new to us then! We’d only adopted him 2 months before. He was ambivalent, I was excited :)

( 2012 )

Fast forward 2 years, Archives is my full time job and that old form is totally worn out and broken. My new and improved form arrived today! But that’s not all…

I take all the shop photos in an unused room in our basement. The yellow florescent light in there is AWFUL. So, so awful. I’ve had a studio lighting kit for about a year. I recently FINALLY started using it, and am so happy with the results!

The final product, below. Things have really come around since my first sale (haha, yikes)!
